Pearl District
Neighborhood Overview:
It’s easy to see what’s so attractive about Portland’s Pearl District. Named in 2007 as one of Money Magazine’s best places to retire it draws everyone from retirees, downsizers and empty-nesters to young professionals, families and hipsters of all ages. Portland’s Pearl District teems with a vibrant, urban energy that still manages to be friendly and easy to navigate. Well-connected to the neighboring NW District and downtown Portland via the street car, the Pearl includes a small riverfront neighborhood, Old Town/Chinatown, the North Pearl and the Brewery Blocks. It is the jewel in the crown of Portland’s highly regarded urban planning system.
True to Portland’s nature, the Pearl has several parks. Jamison Square, which is bordered by cafes and shops, features a child’s fountain designed like a tidal pool. Tanner Springs is a one-block-square oasis of wetlands and nature-scapes. The North Park Blocks spotlight tall trees and shaded park benches with basketball courts and a playground. Fields Park in the North Pearl is planned to have a footbridge that will connect to Centennial Mills – the redevelopment of the NW Industrial District. Home to several grocery stores, a plethora of restaurants and cafes, fine shopping, Powell’s City of Books and Gerding Theater at the Armory its easy to imagine living car-free in the Pearl. It have been designated Portland’s “most walkable” neighborhood by walkscore.com.
Residents of the Pearl make their homes in modern high-rise condo and apartment buildings, warehouse to loft conversions and a handful of coveted townhomes crafted from historic industrial buildings.
