Downtown
Neighborhood Overview:
Downtown Portland on the westbank of the Willamette River is home to the city’s business and cultural districts. Downtown has smaller block sizes than many cities making it pedestrian-friendly. It is the hub of Portland’s well-developed mass transit system which includes buses, light rail (MAX line) and the street car. Popular gathering places for many festivals and celebrations include Pioneer Courthouse Square (dubbed “Portland Living Room” by locals) and Tom McCall Waterfront Park along the Willamette River. The South Park Blocks are home to many cultural venues such as the Portland Art Museum, the Oregon Historical Society, Portland Center for the Performing Arts and the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall. Also located in downtown is Portland State University – Oregon’s only urban university, it boasts the largest enrollment numbers in the State and is well known for its urban/regional planning and environmental studies programs. Properties in downtown Portland are primarily apartments and high-rise condos with a few older brick condo conversions or residential hotels scattered throughout. With access to abundant public transportation options, grocery stores, upscale shopping and dining a car is not a necessity for downtown Portland residents.
